Addicted to blogging? Possibly. One more started this week.

Oh my goodness, it's been over a months since I've posted here. It's not that I haven't been blogging, oh no, I've just been busy with other blogs and websites. So Ecotecho was a blog that I started with a classmate as part of a course on internet marketing. To be honest it didn't work out as well as I had hoped. I mean the mark we got on it was excellent, but I was aiming a bit higher. In any case, I won't be updated it as often as we were. I will aim for one a week  but don't hold your breath.

If you haven't seen it the URL is http://eco-techo.blogspot.com, and there you will find articles and views about being environmentally friendly. :-) Of course I still care about that, I'm just juggling other things at the moment.

One of those things is a blog that I've begun about engaging with the world wide web. It will start as simply a how-to and introduction to the variety of websites, focusing on social media and interacting with people. Then I plan on moving towards creating and maintaining your own presence online, which includes blogging, and eventually making your own website for personal/professional use.

I welcome all comments and suggestions. This proect is not even a week old and I have scheduled posts for roughly one each day. The skeleton is up an running, I'll jazz it up and make it look better as time permits. Drop and say hello any time! http://webmazing.blogspot.com

Eco-Techo: The Story of Electronics (2010)

We've begun increasing the online presence of EcoTecho with twitter, digg, and youtube. Our latest blog post
Here's an excerpt:
The "design for the dump" mentality is leading to expanding electronic waste. Companies are pushing products to market which are not designed to be used beyond the next innovation, and consumers are left with very few environmentally friendly choices. Annie gave the example of her old DVD player which would cost much more to fix than to purchase a new one, and we can all think of similar products which we have used ourselves.

Millions of products which use precious metals and toxic materials are poorly recycled, if at all, and negatively impact the communities located near the waste. Maybe it's time to design products to be modular, for a longer lifespan, and to proactively offer a product "take back" program.
If you like what I post, you can find me online by going to www.faysal.tel, where I have listed many of the online handles I use on social media sites.

Eco-Techo: The "Green" Revolution

I've started a new series on one of my blogs, EcoTecho, which is called The "Green" Revolution. Over the following weeks I'll talk about the problem we face as an oil consuming society and explain the importance of renewable energy and sustainability.

http://eco-techo.blogspot.com/2010/11/green-revolution.html

Here's an excerpt:

"...The most well publicised problem we face is the carbon emissions that are a by-product of burning fossil fuels. In order to use oil for energy, we must burn it to produce heat; the process of burning the fuel creates carbon dioxide, among others, which is a greenhouse gas. According to the majority of climate scientists, over the past century we have produced enough greenhouse gasses to significantly alter the atmosphere of the earth. Not surprisingly, increasing global populations and the industrialization of poor nations means we're headed towards even more greenhouses gas emissions.

The second problem we face, which is still not well known, is the depletion of oil reserves throughout the world. The oil that we use for energy can be burned very quickly but it is very difficult to make. The natural process which made the oil we use took a much longer time. Biomass, plants and animals, deep within the Earth must be compressed and/or heated under pressure for millions of years before it turns into oil...."

So many websites, so little time.

Some time ago I decided that it would be much better to embrace the transition to social media sites burgeoning on the internet than to boycott them thinking I would be safe. The truth is, whether or not you have an account online, there's already some information about you on the world wide web. It's better to take a step and and create your own online presence, and you'll have some rather than no control over what other people see and read about you.

What no one tells you is how many types of websites qualify as social media. While they all serve a particular purpose, not everything is worth pursuing. Don't let your second life (online) take over reality.

Learning how to blog

I thought blogging was easy until I tried it. There's a lot of work to do, and I quickly realized how many things I'd have to learn about to make a decent blog. This is going to take longer than I thought.
